Fossil of Space Sponge Captured By Mars Rover

An eagle eyed observer spotted an unusual object in an image sent back by the mars rover.  Looking very out of place, this spherical object bears a striking resemblance to a sea sponge.  Is this a remnant of ocean life on Mars?
